Evolution; how coloration affects moth populations

Brief Description of Activity:
Students will go to a website, in which they will have to play a game simulating a bluejay eating peppered moths on either run lichen or run soot. The students will read the information on the left-hand side of the webpage, play the game and then answer the questions on the analysis page at the very bottom left of the webpage. The website students will visit is http://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/pepperedmoth.html. If the student successfully completes this lesson they may move on to the next activity: Sex and the Single Guppy, which is located on the same webpage as the previous activity.

General Learner Outcome:
Students will explain the mechanisms involved in the change of populations over time.

Specific Learner Outcomes:
Students will explain that variability in the peppered moth results from heritable mutations and that some mutations may have a selective advantage.

ICT Outcomes:
C.6 - Students will use technology to investigate and/or solve problems

C.6.4.2 - investigate and solve problems of organization and manipulation of information

Rationale for Computer Integration:
Computers have been integrated into this assignment so that students are able to work at their own pace. Also, students are able to see the immediate results of how different mutations affect the survival of the peppered moth. With this activity there is a game as well as a worksheet so it provides different ways for individual students in the class learn.

Assignment #2 - Powerpoint Changes!

So I am no expert at Powerpoint, but I believe I managed to successfully make the original Powerpoint presentation 10x better! (I would like to think so anyways...) Here are the few changes I made (in no particular order) in order to do so:

1.I changed the background of the powerpoint
2.I took out irrelevant information and re-worded all of the written material
3.I added a title slide
4.I added a few pictures
5.I took out the animation as it took a long time and was distracting
6.I added titles to all the slides and put them in the upper left hand corner with the same colour, size and font
7.I changed all of the writing to the same colour, size and font
8.I added bullets
9.I made it so that the writing was 1.5 spaced
10.I put less writing and information on each slide
11.I removed redundant information and I corrected incorrect spelling and grammar
12.I added extra slides so that there was less information on each slide and it was easier to read and understand

Kristine Da Silva - First time blogger!!

Hello!

My name is Kristine Da Silva and this is my first time "blogging" though I have heard much about this phenomenon. I am currently in my fourth year at the UofL and I am a Modern Language - French major. I am thrilled to be in the Faculty of Education and I am glad it entails this class on technology as I am in need of improving my technological skills, specifically those involving the computer!

I wasn't in Lethbridge for the semester of Spring 2008 as I was studying french in the south of France which was an absolutely incredible experience. I am hoping to go back to France at some point in my life to teach, perhaps for my PSIII.

I was born and raised in Calgary and I live in a family of accountants though math is probably my weakest subject. Typical how that happens I suppose. I have one older brother who is an avid hockey player and referee and both him and my Dad golf as often as possible! I myself am more of a rugby girl, I have been involved in the sport for a few years now and I am absolutely in love with the game!

Anyways, that is pretty much my life in a nutshell. I am looking forward to a fantastic semester and I am excited to learn new things about technology and teaching! Talk to you soon!
